Gavin, Rheinfelden-Herten, Germany

My family and I live in Rheinfelden-Herten on the Rhein ion the German-Swiss border near to Basel in Switzerland. We moved here in 2012 from Teeside in NE England when our 2 daughters were 3 and almost 1 year old. We moved due to my Swiss employer, for whom I had been working in the UK, offering me a change of job. We are a German-UK dual nationality family. my wife and I know each other since 1994 when she first came as a student to Teesside. After marriage in 2001, through 11 years in the UK together we are now here in Dreilandereck (3 country corner- Germany-Switzerland-France). Despite having to 'put up with' lovely hot summers and outdoor swimming pools we nonetheless trip back to our North Sea beaches!! As to our life here, our oldest daughter in fact dearly wishes that German schools had school uniforms! Strange how 2 nationalities play out in one person and a 'European family' . We are both German and English but sometimes somehow neither.

This postcard is one of several collated as part of collaboration between Dr Michaela Benson and the Migration Museum. A selection of these appears in the Postcards from the British in Europe installation in Departures, the museum's current exhibition exploring four centuries of emigration from Britain, bringing Britain’s emigration story and its emigrants into the national conversation about migration
